Alert - Alberta
Red Hot:

The ABVMA has added the topic of cropping and docking to the agenda of their February 27th meeting. Discussion will take place on that date in regards to a ban on these procedures. It is of utmost importance that letters and emails/ and phone calls are sent to the vets in this province.

URGENT - Newfoundland (NL)

The NL Veterinary Medical Association (NLVMA) voted to ban their members from docking and dew claw removal at a meeting in November 2010. This agenda topic was not made public and passed without anyone knowing. The province made cropping a criminal offense in the 1970s. We have learned recently that the NLVMA has requested that docking and dew claw removal be added to the new Animal Protection Act, making it a criminal offence to conduct these procedures. We have also been informed that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's (CVMA) Code of Practices for Canadian Kennel Operations will become part of the Animal Protection Act (APA) regulations. This Code was not designed as legislation and covers every conceivable dog related activity including vaccinations, line breeding, nutrition, and so on.  Its attachment to the APA in New Brunswick has caused havoc for responsible breeders in that province.

The APA must be approved by the House and as elected officials the Members of the House of Assembly (MHA) will be open to views from the public. It is important MHA’s in NL receive letters opposing the addition of docking and dew claw removal and the CVMA's Code of Practices for Canadian Kennel Operations to the Animal Protection Act. An amendment to the APA in this province will set a precedent for the rest of the country.

Alert Update - Ontario

A committee has been struck by CVO to review the comments and information received over the last few months on the topic of cropping and docking.  Dr. John Reeve-Newson, a respected Ontario veterinarian (pro crop and dock) has been asked to serve on the committee and was in contact with an Alliance member. He was directed to the Alliance website and also sent additional information gleaned from other lists and sites both across Canada and in other countries. At this point we have been asked to not send more letters as they will be looking at the information received and make a decision based on their finding.

Alert - British Columbia:

The BCVMA became the CVBC (College of Veterinarians of British Columbia) on September 15.2010.This changes the organization and By-laws and gives the Minister of Agriculture a presence on the board. Carol Hauta organized a group of people to try and combat rumors of a vote on cropping and docking. Dr. Corry Van Der Ende, a cropping and docking vet joined a meeting held at the Lower Mainland Dog Show in November. This group brainstormed the best way to go forward in the fight against a cropping and docking ban. The CVBC took public input on the topic until November 5th.At this point we have no updates.

Alert -Sask Update:

The SVMA voted on a ban on cropping and docking at their meeting on Oct 1, 2010.The ban was voted down by a narrow margin. This will be revisited in the spring so it is important to stay in contact with your vet and the SVMA to see when the vote will be revisited.
