URGENT - Newfoundland (NL)
The NL Veterinary Medical Association (NLVMA) voted to ban their members from docking and dew claw removal at a meeting in November 2010. This agenda topic was not made public and passed without anyone knowing. The province made cropping a criminal offense in the 1970s. We have learned recently that the NLVMA has requested that docking and dew claw removal be added to the new Animal Protection Act, making it a criminal offence to conduct these procedures. We have also been informed that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's (CVMA) Code of Practices for Canadian Kennel Operations will become part of the Animal Protection Act (APA) regulations. This Code was not designed as legislation and covers every conceivable dog related activity including vaccinations, line breeding, nutrition, and so on. Its attachment to the APA in New Brunswick has caused havoc for responsible breeders in that province.
The APA must be approved by the House and as elected officials the Members of the House of Assembly (MHA) will be open to views from the public. It is important
MHA’s in NL receive letters opposing the addition of docking and dew claw removal and the CVMA's Code of Practices for Canadian Kennel Operations to the Animal Protection Act. An amendment to the APA in this province will set a precedent for the rest of the country.
